Hiking Camping Lens

Hiking Camping Lens
is anything more confusing than searching for a tripod? help.?

Okay, I got a Nikon d5000 for Christmas along with an 55-200 mm lens. This summer I am taking a road trip for about 40 days all over the US. This includes several hikes, camp outs and national parks. I’m also really really interested in time lapse. So, I have been searching online for several hours now for a good quality, inexpensive tripod.
I don’t want it to weigh a ton.
I don’t want it to cost more than 70 dollars.
I don’t mind buying used.

advice?

It’s a dilemma. You don’t want to spent a lot, but the tripod needs to be sturdy enough. Bigger and heavier can be more convenient to use, but harder to carry.

A tripod that should be adequate is the Cullmann Jet Set.

http://www.adorama.com/CU52013.html

It can fit in a fairly small daypack. I used one with my G10 for my Taiwan trip.

Another capable tripod is the Sunpak Digipro Compact.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/366412-REG/Sunpak_620_005B_DigiPro_Compact_B_Tripod.html

It has an unusual leg locking system that takes more getting used to. It closes a little smaller than the Cullmann, but it weighs a little more. The head is set back slightly from the balance point, which can improve steadiness with a DSLR with a front-heavy lens. With a Nikon D60 with 18-200mm, it is less likely than my SLIK Sprint Pro to sag while tightening it because of this feature.

Slightly more capable, but heavier and bigger is the SLIK Sprint Pro

http://www.adorama.com/SLSP23WBK.html

It can fit in a medium sized pack but is too long for a small pack. This has easier leg locks to operate. It has been my choice for winter trips with my DSLR to the far north.

All use quick release plates. The Cullmann might be the hardest to find replacements for. The Sprint Pro has an attached lever for tightening. The lighter tripods require a screwdriver or coin for tightening or loosening the knob of the quick release plate.
